I lead because I want to be a model for women, especially women who are poverty-stricken.
Running for office as a woman has been, in a word, unbelievable. There is a condescending nature toward woman that is palpable. However, it has been women who inspired me to achieve my goals. I’ve been fortunate to have the support of numerous women’s organizations, like the Greig Women in Leadership Fund. They support me financially, but more importantly, they also open doors for me. They helped me believe in myself. The fact that women are running for office today in record-breaking numbers is as incredible as Barack Obama winning the presidency. I thought I’d never see the day!
My mother has been an incredible mentor to me. She raised 13 children as a single parent and taught me that I could achieve anything I wanted to.
